Correlation

What do you mean by correlation?

Correlation is a statistical measure that indicates the extent to which two or more variables fluctuate together. A positive correlation indicates the extent to which those variables increase or decrease in parallel; a negative correlation indicates the extent to which one variable increases as the other decreases.

Biserial Correlation

Biserial correlation (rbis) is a correlational index that estimates the strength of a relationship between an artificially dichotomous variable (X) and a true continuous variable (Y). Both variables are assumed to be normally distributed in their underlying populations.

The point biserial correlation coefficient(rpb) is a correlation coefficient used when one variable (e.g. Y) is dichotomous; Y can either be "naturally" dichotomous, like whether a coin lands heads or tails, or an artificially dichotomized variable.

What is a Dichotomous variable?

dichotomous variable is one that takes on one of only two possible values when observed or measured. The value is most often a representation for a measuredvariable (e.g., age: under 65/65 and over) or an attribute (e.g., gender: male/female).

What is the difference between Point Biserial and Biserial Correlation?

point-biserial and biserial correlation is used to correlate a dichotomy with an interval-scaled variable. The difference is that the point-biserial correlation is used when the dichotomous variable is a true or discrete dichotomy and the biserial correlation is used with an artificial dichotomy.

What is the Point Biserial Correlation used for?

Point-biserial correlation coefficient. The point biserial correlation coefficient(rpb) is a correlation coefficient used when one variable (e.g. Y) is dichotomous; Y can either be "naturally" dichotomous, like whether a coin lands heads or tails, or an artificially dichotomized variable.

What is a good point biserial correlation?

Point biserial correlation. ... The closer the point biserial correlation is to +1.0 the more reliable the question is considered because it discriminates well among students who mastered the test material and those who did not. A point biserial correlation of 0.0 means the question didn't discriminate at all.

What is Phi Correlation?

In statistics, the phi coefficient (or mean square contingency coefficient and denoted by φ or rφ) is a measure of association for two binary variables. Introduced by Karl Pearson, this measure is similar to the Pearson correlation coefficient in its interpretation.
